Samantha Fergus

A creative, boundary-pushing UI/UX designer and brand strategist.

What is your freelance service?

UX/UI design / Brand strategy & creative brainstorming

Briefly share how you became a freelancer.

Freelancing to me is two things: Creating with a purpose, your Scrapy and your brain can stretch. The other side is that it can be demanding with tight deadlines. For me, that is why I freelance. The paradox of the two is like a beautiful marriage between chaos and order.

What has been your biggest win as a freelancer?

Win for me is letting go of ego when it comes to the creative space. Now, I am not saying that it’s totally gone. I will always advocate for myself. However, when I say a win for me was letting go of my ego, is as a creative you are always going to be a student. Ego is proving your creativity is better than anyone. When in fact two heads are always better than one.

What are some of the hurdles you’ve overcome as a freelancer? Do you think these hurdles are indicative of the freelancer profession overall?

Hurdles…hmm… imposter syndrome hurdle. I do say in the freelancer space these hurdles are definitely indicative.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out as a freelancer?

I would say stay true to who you are. The trends are nice and yes there are certain constraints within this space. Don’t be afraid to push boundaries. Get good at telling your story and never EVER stop creating. Stay healthy and have a support system that at the core knows you.

Let’s say I’m a client that’s looking to hire a freelancer that does what you do. Why should I hire you?

I first start off with questions. If it is design-related UX/UI, what problem are you trying to solve? Who is your user? If it is brand strategy. I ask all the “W’s. (why, what, who, when.) This will give you and me the ability to really understand and come up with a version that you will be proud of. I am in constant communication, Scrapy, there are so many tools out there that can help you with your journey. Lastly, you are asking me to solve your problems or bring your vision to life. Not the other way around.
