Introducing Claudia Bueno and Camila Vargas

This mother-daughter duo handcrafts exquisite straw bags, clutches, and jewelry.

Briefly share how you became a freelancer.

We come from a family of women that enjoy spending their time doing various types of artwork like crochet, embroidery, beading, painting, and sewing. We have always been curiously creative and spend quality mother and daughter time visiting craft stores, looking for new projects, trying different materials, and learning new techniques. We make accessories for us to wear and home décor pieces, as well. One day my aunt who lives in Canada motivated us to make straw bags for us to wear during the summer. We looked for colorful materials and decided to learn how to make pompoms and tassels to add them to the bags. We picked and chose different styles until we were happy with the results and started wearing them around town. A friend of ours liked it and asked us if we could sell her one. That was the moment when we decided to pursue our dream of making our hobby into something more. We began creating Straw bags, clutches, and jewelry under our brand Unfolded Bloom. A name that comes from our love for flowers blooming during spring.

What has been your biggest win as a freelancer?

Our biggest win has been seeing our clients wearing our designs. There is nothing more rewarding than doing what we love and making people happy with what we create.

What are some of the hurdles you’ve overcome as a freelancer in Houston? Do you think these hurdles are indicative to Houston or to the freelancer profession overall?

One of the biggest hurdles we have overcome is learning to do everything by ourselves. Design the logo and packaging, print our tags, and take all the pictures for our social media accounts. To be honest, it has been a learning journey. Every challenge comes with something new to learn! Regardless of where you reside, these are things that some of us as business owners have to go through at one point.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out as a freelancer?

Believe in your own potential and do things with love, because that would be reflected in your product/service. If you have a vision about your business, keep it! Don’t let people dictate how your business should be like.

Let’s say I’m a client that’s looking to hire a freelancer that does what you do. Why should I hire you?

We are very passionate about each piece we design, and we constantly learn from our trials and errors. We take our time and pay close attention to every single detail of our pieces. All the knitting and wirework that you see in every pair of earrings, bracelets, and necklaces are all handmade. We hand-picked all the pearls and beads because we always want to give our customers the best quality materials.
